Camp Taum Sauk Overview
Camp Taum Sauk is a private co-ed overnight camp for kids 8-15 years old. Family owned and operated, we are dedicated to providing kids with an amazing summer camp experience in a safe, nurturing, fun atmosphere. We offer a wide range of land and water activities, including; horseback riding, canoeing, rafting, kayaking, paddle boarding, ropes course, mountain biking, archery, caving, nature, arts, and crafts, performing arts, and more.
Who works at Camp Taum Sauk?
Our excellent staff includes college students, teachers, health care professionals, artists, musicians, athletes, and skilled professionals, who all share an appreciation for working with kids and the impact the camp experience provides. Our staff range in age from 18-65, with 19-20 as the average age of a counselor.
Where is Camp Taum Sauk located?
Camp Taum Sauk is located 120 miles south of St. Louis, situated along the beautiful Black River in the heart of Missouri. The region is characterized by hilly scenic terrain, cool shady valleys, and crystal-clear spring-fed rivers. Many of Missouri's great natural wonders are close to Taum Sauk, including Johnson Shut-in, Elephant Rocks, Big Springs, Mina Sauk Falls, and Taum Sauk Mountain, which is the highest point in Missouri.
What clothes should I pack?
During the summer, the average temperature at camp is High: 88F/31C, Low: 68F/20C. People typically wear T-shirts, shorts, tennis shoes, water-resistant sandals during the day, and jeans and sweat-shirts at night. Because we are located along the river, we suggest that you bring two or three swimming suits and closed-toe water shoes for the river. Free laundry facilities are available for all staff, as well as laundry service for a small fee.
How much will I be paid?
Salary is based on years working at camp and experience. Bonuses are added to the base salary accordingly, depending on the degree, experience, certifications, and specialty training. Room and board for all staff are included.
Do I get time off?
Absolutely. We realize working at camp can be tiring, and we know our staff needs time to recharge and have some me-time. We provide at least one scheduled free period every day and time off during most evenings. Staff members receive one day off per week and a 24-hour day/night off during session breaks.
Can I complete an internship?
Yes, staff can complete internships for Education, Sports Management, Psychology, Business, and other degrees. We will work with you and your college advisor to develop the appropriate internship plan. More and more schools are open to conversations about how to make this work for their programs.
Can I use my cell phone?
Camp Taum Sauk has a no-internet policy that keeps technology out of the daily camp experience for campers. Staff must understand and support this core value and are comfortable separating themselves from their cell phones. Staff members may only use personal cell phones and laptops during their time off, away from campers (staff lounge, office, or off-site). When staff is on duty, cell phones are stored and charged in the staff office. Staff may not carry cell phones on them while on duty unless used for communication during camp trips.
Transportation to Camp Taum Sauk?
Staff members and campers fly into St. Louis Lambert International airport. We will arrange a pick up at the airport and drive you to camp (approximately 2 hours). You are welcome to have your own transportation at camp. Staff can ride the scheduled charter bus that transports campers to and from St. Louis during session breaks. Car-pool rides are also encouraged.
Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Policy
Smoking is not permitted around campers at any time. The use of any controlled substance is absolutely prohibited at Camp Taum Sauk. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on camp property, and no one is to return to camp under the influence.
What does a typical day look like?
7:30 - Wake up
8:00 - Breakfast
8:45 - Cabin cleanup
9:15-12:15 (4-45 minute) activity periods
12:30 - Lunch
1:30 - Rest Period
3:00-5:15 3-45 min. activity periods
5:30 - Dinner
6:15 - Sports and camper free-time
7:30 - Evening Program
8:45 - Treat & Song time
9:15 - Taps (Lights out)
10:00 - Staff free time (except if on night duty)

As a staff member at Camp Taum Sauk, you will gain experience in the following life-long skills:
Responsibility: There is no greater responsibility than caring for other people’s children. Camp counselors are responsible for the 24-hour care of a group of children. A counselor’s role is essential to the camp’s successful operation.
Teamwork: Camp provides a unique opportunity where counselors live, work, and have fun together. The friendships that develop over the summer are some of the strongest and long-lasting relationships. Camp counselors learn to adapt as they live and work with a wide range of people with different personalities and backgrounds.
Communication Skills: Without the distraction of social media and technology, camp counselors strengthen their communication skills by having face-to-face interaction with other staff members and campers. Camp counselors learn how to read social cues and practice conflict resolution daily.
Creativity and Problem Solving: Camp counselors learn to be flexible and think quickly when program schedules change. Whether it’s altering plans due to weather or figuring out how to motivate your cabin group to go to an activity or complete a task, camp counselors learn to be creative and solve problems.

As a mentor, counselors have the opportunity to examine their behavior and conduct themselves appropriately at all times. It is a powerful, life-changing experience to be a role model for a child.
